Tai Chi Overview

Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese moving meditation that cultivates focus and calm. It is a powerful holistic tool that will help you regain your focus, energy and enthusiasm. Tai Chi is a series of carefully-programmed movements. These gentle movements encourage circulation, increase flexibility and coordination, and reduce tension throughout the body. Drawn from the ancient wisdom of Taoism and Confucianism, Tai Chi is a soft style of martial arts that allows you to experience the flow of your life energy or Chi (also called Qi). This powerful awareness supports you in living fully in the present. As you notice yourself slipping into frustration and worry, the practice of Tai Chi will allow you to return to a centered and calm presence.

Tai Chi is an excellent program for recovery from an illness, injury, substance abuse or simply taking athletic skills to a world-class level. Stress can block the flow of Chi which can lead to injury and illness. Tai Chi's graceful forms incorporate deep breathing, relaxation and a full range of movement to release blocked energy and allow Chi to flow naturally again. This develops vitality, mental calm and clarity.

Tai Chi is an ideal lifelong exercise that is accessible for all levels of ability. From the beginning of their training students are encouraged to relax, find balance and coordinate their breathing with their motions. The same energy which heals in Tai Chi also supports its use in self-defense. Defensive and offensive movements build calm, focus and self-confidence. This fosters an awareness of the environment and the ability to maintain a protective space. Rather than feeling depleted by tension and aggression, it is possible to learn to preserve and even share positive energy with others around you.
